    Big money is in advertising

    When you make the plunge into fulltime free lancing , you might as well go for the big time money the field of advertising photography . Be cause the big money is in advertising , you'll find all the big time names are in advertising photography . You'll be competing with all the big shots of photo illustration .

    But , never be afraid of competition . There is always room for another big shot and , that just might be you .

    in advertising Obviously , for a $ 2000 or $ 3000 product package illustration , an art director might not take a chance with new talent . But , if you have successfully com pleted a few small jobs for an ad agency art director and a big job comes along you may be the one selected to get the lucrative " big " assignment .

    In the competitive area of big time advertising the most talented photographer may not always get the job . Being a good friend or relative of the art director or client might get you a job or two . But , if you mess up the assignment you got through politics , you won't get another chance .

    The best way to get assignments is to be the best photographer in your specialty . The art buyer or director goes to the specialist because he knows he will usually do a better and faster job for him than a jack - of - all - trades lensman . Because most jobs in advertising are wanted " yesterday " , the specialist in the long run will win out .

    You can find the names and addresses of all of the advertising agencies and their key personnel in the " Standard Directory of Advertising Agencies " or the " Agency Red Book " . It is published by the National Register Publishing Company , Skokie , IL 60076 , three times a year and costs about $ 20 . Most large libraries have a copy on hand .

    Once you get to freelancing fulltime , you have to be on the alert for new markets all the time . Ask yourself who might use animal photographs , where do you see animal pictures being used ? Where you see such pictures used , there will be your markets : Book publishers , encyclopedias , annual reports , candy makers ( mostly abroad ) , playing cards , jig saw puzzles , postcards , record covers and a whole range of other fields are wide open for good pic tures of animals . If you are alert , you will find or create new markets for your work .

    While looking around , don't forget to keep in touch with your existing markets . Keep them in formed of what you are doing , where your work sold or was published recently . Promote yourself to keep the markets alert to you and the fact that you are always ready to serve them .

    One nice thing about being a specialist in animal photography is that once you have become estab lished , people who use animal photographs will seek you out . Before you know it , you'll be getting big fat fees and you'll wonder why you didn't get into freelancing a long time ago .

    Put some away for rainy day

    When you do get those big fees , resist the big temptation to get a snappy new sports car or that telephoto lens you'll rarely use . Spend for essentials only . Set aside some of your windfall for a rainy day . Build up your stock file so that it will carry you over when you decide to retire ; a good stock picture file can produce a good and steady income for years on end if you maintain it and keep the pictures moving around to potential markets all the time !

    There will be many rainy days when you free lance . But , there will be many more sunny days and you'll be glad you are a freelancer .

    You'll be your own boss . You won't have any time clocks to punch . You'll be able to goof off and take vacations when you want to do so : And , in what other job will you make big money for doing something you enjoy so very much - taking and making animal photographs !
