COLOR AND B / W FILTERS
Some photographers shoot color exclusively underwater . If they need them , black - and - white negatives can be made from the color film - or , everything can be shot on color nega tive material . A CC10 - R filter cuts down the blue and brings up the red a bit with color film . For black - and white shooting underwater in a pool , use an orange filter for better contrast .
Many photographers use a pool with a window but others prefer to submerge with the model so as to be able to shoot from all angles rather than being restricted to one vantage point . By submerging with the model it is possible to shoot up towards the surface of the water . This gives some interesting reflection patterns . The surface if not disturbed too much , can act as a mirror .
Working above water around a pool . is not always easy because the back grounds usually interfere . If you are lucky to find a pool that is built on top of a hill with a sky area to work against , it will be possible to shoot from in the pool . This will place your model against the sky background .
Too often pools are located in a secluded area and the only way to achieve a clear background is to shoot down with the water acting as a back ground . This limits the photographer and model as to pose and angle . If there is a diving board or high plat form , this can offer possibilities .
EVEN THE photographer gets wet shooting glamour in the waves at the beach ( below ) , and for this unique underwater figure study shot in a swimming pool . Orange filter was used for more contrast .
The beach is a much easier and more natural place to make use of the water . If you have a watertight camera housing , it is possible to wade out into the surf with your model and catch some exciting action with the waves .
It isn't necessary , however , to have a watertight camera because a more mild type of action with the water is possible by posing the model in the shallow surf and letting the waves either wash over her body if she is lying down - or , splash against her legs if she is kneeling or seated . The action of the water can be frozen by use of a fast shutter speed ( / 125th or higher ) , while it can be blurred to con vey action by use of a slower speed .
TAKE A LADDER
Many photographers take a step ladder along with them on location as signments of all kinds . Take one with you to the beach because it will permit taking high angle shots with the model posed either on the sand or in shallow surf . Because sand can shift and make the ladder unsteady , it is best to have an assistant brace it while you are perched atop it shooting . This is an absolute necessity when the ladder is positioned in the water .
If you have no assistant along with you , you can generally recruit one of the group of fellows who will be watching you and your model at work .
Whenever a pretty girl is being pho tographed they flock around and are most eager to be of help . Such groups can sometimes be a nuisance if the girl is at all concerned about an audience while she is posing .
CLOTHES CUT THE CHILL
In cooler weather when the chill is too much for a bikini , some attractive shots can be made with the model dressed in jeans and a shirt . This is a good outfit for some action type pic tures of her running in the surf or kicking at the water . Save the wet shots until the end and if your model is a good sport , have her lie down in the surf so she is completely covered with wet , clinging clothes . In the fin ished picture the viewer will never guess that the photo was made on a real chilly day . When the water is not too cold , in fact , you can have your model attired in lighter clothing such as silk jersey . Then , when she gets saturated by the water , her shape will be more visible than through a heavy pair of jeans .
Water will add greatly to a pic ture , but if you don't have the ocean , lake or a stream handy - get out the garden hose or try throwing a bucket of water at your model and get an authentic candid reaction . Water adds limitless possibilities to your glamour shots . Don't overlook what it can do for you in creating interesting pictures .
SHOOT WATER action photos at end of session so it won't matter if costume gets wet . A flash - fill was used here to open up the shadows .
