    Sitters and models

    Sitters
    Finding and selecting suitable subjects is very important . First , decide what kind of portrait you are aiming at , and what kind of subject you require . A model agency should be your last resort . It is very easy to get interesting subjects for portraiture just by asking most people love to be photographed , but they often like to have some excuse for it . A good idea is to decide on a series of portraits - portraits of all the people living in one street , for example , or of all the children in one block . This gives you a long - term project , and serves as an excuse when approach ing your next potential sitter .
    Even well - known , busy personalities , given a plausible reason such as an exhibition or a projected book , may agree to sit for you . I started out as an amateur by contacting famous painters and sculptors . In those early days I never asked for a sitting immediately . Instead , I said I would like to come and show them some of my portraits of other people , and added that if they liked my work they might perhaps allow me to photograph them . This type of modest request , inter spersed with some praise of their work . was rarely refused .

    Sometimes an excuse will not be necessary . A direct approach on the
    street will often be successful . You must convince the person you approach that you are a bona - fide photographer making a genuine request . A visiting card with your name , address , and the title " portrait photographer " will help a lot . Ask the person you approach to call you if they want to sit for you , and mention that you will give them some free prints . Make sure that they understand that you are offering them a portrait free of charge - most people love to get something for nothing . Above all you must act the part self - assured , relaxed and convincing . And it may help to be an extrovert like the great Victorian portraitist Julia Margaret Cameron , who often dragged people in from the street if they seemed suitable for one of her numerous projects .

    Model card A Most professional models have a " composite " or model card . This consists of one or two photographs - usually a close - up and a full - length study - and some relevant information . If the model card is not sufficient you can also ask to see the model's portfolio - a collection of pictures of him or her taken by other photographers he or she has worked for .

    Make - up kit ▷ Often , your sitter or model may need a little make - up . It is a good idea to have a selection of make - up items available . A basic make - up kit consists of foundation , coloring pencils , lipstick , blusher and highlighter , trans lucent powder , and cotton balls and brushes to apply make - up .

    Models
    For some subjects , like glamorous or decorative portraiture , you may have to turn to a model agency . The agency will show you several model's cards - often called " composites " - with their descrip tions , but it is best to try and select models personally . Before going to an agency make a few notes on the kind of picture you intend to take . Most agencies are very helpful - if you tell them your exact requirements they will try to find you the right model . They will also ask you what kind of clothing and accessories you require . If these are not available , or if you are using a non - professional sitter , you will have to get them from a theatrical rental agency . Always draw up a model release form and ask the model to sign it . Good , experienced models are often quite expensive , but they are generally worth their fees . A good model will help you to get the best possible picture - she will relax from the first moment , and will almost invariably assume natural poses . A professional model should also know how to apply make - up successfully for a photograph . I am often amazed at the difference between the person who arrives for the session and the one who emerges half an hour later for the actual sitting .

    Model release form A It is always best to acquire full legal rights to your photographs by asking your sitters to sign a model release form . If you are commissioned to take a portrait for a fee , the copyright belongs to the person who gave you the commission , unless you reach a specific agreement . = Ask the person who commissioned you to pay you only a nominal fee as long as you can retain the copyright in exchange .
