    Self - portraits

Every would - be portrait photographer should try a self - portrait . It is great fun to do , and it can teach you a great deal . Start with a reflective surface , preferably a mirror . Even if you do not intend to include the mirror in the actual shot , it is still best to be able to see yourself as you will appear in the photograph so that you can assess your pose and expression . This will be quite instructive - you will realise how difficult it is to assume a natural - looking pose for a portrait .

There are two basic methods of taking a self portrait . The simpler method is to photograph your own reflection directly in a mirror . The difficulty with this is that if you can see the camera in the mirror , then you will be able to see it in the picture too . If you do not want to include the camera , you will have to use the second method . Place your camera on a tripod , focus on a friend who acts as a stand - in for you or set the lens to a pre - measured dis tance , and then use the camera's self - timer or a very long cable release to fire the shutter release once you are standing in position .

All the self - portraits on these pages were taken by some of our photography students in the course of a portrait project .

Shooting your reflection ▷ The image is reflected in an enlarger lens fixed to a 5x4 studio camera for support . As well as studio flash , Paul O'Kane used available light . He cut a window shape in black paper and placed this in front of the window . blocking out the rest of the light , see diagram right . He used a friend as a stand - in to help him compose and focus the shot . When he was ready he took his place , firing the camera and flash with a cable release . De Vere 5 × 4 , 150 mm , 1 sec at f16 , Ektachrome 64 .

Nighttime self - portrait Carl Warner took this in a cemetery at night . He placed his camera on a tripod , focused on a pre measured distance and then set the shutter for a 6 sec exposure . A tungsten street lamp lit his head . Once he had set the self timer he ran to his chosen spot , stood still for the first 4 sec of the exposure , and then moved during the last 2 sec to produce the blurred effect . Canon A1 , 24 mm , 6 sec at f8 , Ektachrome 160 .

Triple self - portrait ▷ Tracy Nicholls ' self portrait is the reflection of herself with her camera . The other two " self portraits " are , in fact , her twin sister , see diagram above . Working on your own , you could achieve a similar result using a double mask attachment ( see p . 130 ) . You could then shoot your reflection on one side of the frame , and use your self - timer to allow you to position yourself near to the mirror for a second image . Pentax Spotmatic , 90 mm , 1/30 sec at f16 . Ektachrome 160 .
