DARKROOM SHELVES
STORING CHEMICALS . It seems to be an invariable rule to skimp on shelf space for the storage of chemicals . You should allow yourself enough shelf space to take care of all the chemicals you can think of - and then double the allowance .
Chemical shelves should be quite narrow , so that at least the larger bottles are arranged one deep . There seems to be no satisfactory system for arranging bottles or containers in double rows . If you place the more commonly used chemicals in front , invariably the bottle you want manages to hide behind a large can . If , on the other hand , you place the small bottles in front , they always manage to get pushed off the shelf and broken when you reach for the larger bottles in back .

The important thing , therefore , is not only to have plenty of shelf space , but to have it usable . A number of shelves six to eight inches deep , rather closely spaced not over ten inches apart - is probably the best arrangement . The upper tier of shelves should be slightly shorter than the lower to give you some extra height at the ends for keeping tall bottles .
BOTTLE SPACE . The shelf space provided for the storage of chemicals may be used for stock solutions in quart or smaller quantities , but store the more bulky solutions , such as hypo , in racks near the floor . However , if the sink is small so that all of the space under it is given up to the trays ( which get first choice ) , the chemical or developer bench will do almost as well .
STORING EQUIPMENT . Additional shelving should be provided for the storage of other darkroom equipment when not in use . A narrow shelf next to the enlarger , for example , will be useful for keeping the timer , enlarger masks , dodgers , and other enlarger accessories . A large shelf should be built underneath the developer bench for its entire length . It may be from ten to twelve inches deep and at least twelve inches below the bench top . You will find this shelf invaluable for storing large items such as print dryers , trimmers , and contact printers . Funnels , graduates , and thermometers may be hung from hooks or wooden pegs under the chemical shelves or over the sink .
The space underneath the darkroom sink should be used to store trays and large bottles of solutions . You can reduce the chipping of steel - enameled trays to a minimum by building narrow , vertical racks under the sink , each just wide enough to hold one tray , as illustrated in Figure 13 .
