المعرفة العلمية أرقى من المعرفة العامية ، والإنسان يطلب العلم ليتجنب النقص الذي شاهدناه في آثار المعرفة العامية ، فهو إما أن يطلب العلم لذاته ، وإما أن يطلبه لنتائجه العملية أو الغنية ، فإن طلبه لذاته كان محباً للحقيقة، وإن طلبه لنتائجه العملية كان ميالاً

قال أرسطو : ( العلم هو معرفة الملل ، ، والحوادث الطبيعية لا تصبح معقولة إلا إذا أدركنا أسبابها ونواميسها ؛ إلا أن العلم لا يبحث عن علل الاشياء فقط ، بل يبين لنا كيفية تأثيرها بعضها في بعض ، فالرجل العامي يشاهد بعينه سقوط الاجسام ، أما العالم فيبين لنا كيفية سقوطها وفقاً لنظام ثابت . فالعلم إذن هو البحث عن القوانين الطبيعية . إذا ألقيت على الطبيعة نظرة سطحية ، من غير أن تتعمق في إدراك حقائقها وجدت حوادثها كثيرة التغير دائمة التبدل : لانك لا تجد على شجرة واحدة ورقتين متساويتين ، ولا في نبات واحد حبتين متماثلتين ، حق انك لتجد الورقة الواحدة تتغير من وقت إلى آخر بتأثير المبادلات الكيماوية التي تحدث فيها. ولكنك إذا تعمقت في درس الحوادث الطبيعية قليلا أدركت أن وراء هذه الكثرة وحدة ، وأن التحليل يكشف لك عن عناصر ثابتة وراء هذه المظاهر المتغيرة ، فمن ذلك أن في أوراق الشجر صفات واحدة مشتركة يمكن تجريدها ، وأن التبادل الكيماوي نفسه خاضع لقوانين ثابتة . فالعلم يجمع هذه المشابهات الثابتة ( Ressemblances constantes ، ، ويستنبط منها علاقات عامة يسميها العلماء بالقوانين الطبيعية .
فالقانون الطبيعي علاقة ثابتة وضرورية بين ظاهرتين طبيعيتين. والعلوم يختلف بعضها عن بعض بالظواهر التي تبحث فيها ، فعلم الفلك يبحث في الاجرام السماوية وحركاتها ، وعلم الفيزياء يبحث في التوازن والضوء ، والكهرباء ، والحرارة ، وعلم الكيماء يبحث في المعادن وأشباه المعادن والاجسام العضوية .
